F.A.Q

What are the benefits of having Guitar Lessons?

The guitar is an ever popular instrument due to it's versatility and it's true use in many styles of music.
Students of all ages, abilities and musical tastes can benefit from lessons in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.

What can I expect from Guitar Lessons?

A guitarist learns never to be bored. They can play other peoples' music, compose their own, improvise and learn from other musicians. They can join bands, accompany themselves or simply enjoy the act of playing for itself.
The guitar is a flexible, versatile instrument which is suited to many musical styles, making it relevant to a great range of people.

What about Musical Theory?

A knowledge of musical theory is not required in order to play the guitar. I aim to provide students with the theoretical knowledge required to play a particular piece of music, be it part of a solo, song or composition, however it's all very informal. If you wish to explore the theoretical side further, we will do this in a way that involves as much playing as possible. Music is a practical subject and is best learnt through actually doing it!

Do I have to read music?

No! Reading music is an option that is offered to all of my students, but for those students that wish to concentrate more on developing their playing skills as quickly as possible, the easy to read tablature (tab) system is used.

Am I too old or too young to have Guitar Lessons?

The answer to this is definitely no! I have taught students of all ages in the past. It is however worth considering that younger children are not all able to concentrate and retain information in the same way older people are. This means that they may not appear to learn much to begin with. The main benefit for them is the opportunity to engage with an instrument and discover how to explore their creativity in a musical fashion.
Parents of young children are welcome to sit in on guitar lessons if it helps them to feel comfortable and confident.

Is a half hour lesson long enough or should I have an hour?

A half hour lesson is sufficient for a lot of people but an hour's lesson leaves more time to reinforce what has been learnt and is a more intense practice session.
